It’s been the longest season ever in the history of the show and now, after 97 days, 44 competitions, and 14 evictions, Derrick Levasseur wins it all! Watching the finale brought an end to a very satisfying season. I forget who said it, but someone had mentioned that this season wasn’t huge in any “blindsiding” ways. This is very true, and for the fans that really depend on that aspect of the show, I can imagine why they would be super displeased with this season. In fact, I’ve heard on several occasions how a lot of fans considered this to be one of the worst seasons. But, I could not disagree more.
Big Brother 16 will go down in my book as one of the most memorable seasons and a lot of it has to do with Derrick. It wouldn’t take a genius to realize at the halfway mark of the season that Derrick was well on his way to the finals, but what was incredibly amazing to watch, was seeing him GET AWAY WITH IT! Every seed that he planted, every move he made; Derrick has become one of the most calculating players to ever play the game. And what’s even more impressive is that just like with the houseguests, he makes viewers LIKE the fact that he won! Winners of past seasons could easily be questioned on whether or not they really deserved the win, but with Derrick, I really can’t think of any legitimate reason why he’s not deserving. His actions weren’t harsh enough to burn jury votes, he played and won enough competing to cover that aspect of the game, and his social game was extremely top notch. On top of that, he treated people in the house with humility and respect that normally doesn’t merit a houseguest’s chances of making it to the end, but somehow he pulled it off! These aren’t the only reasons why I absolutely loved this finale though.
What I found the most rewarding about this entire season is that Derrick made it to the finals WITH Cody Calafiore, who showed the most amazing characteristic by sticking to his word despite the fact that everyone and their mother knew that if Cody took Derrick to the final two, he was kissing away $500,000. Commitment, respect, dignity, trust, and loyalty were screaming in our faces when Cody said goodbye to Victoria. People have this notion that in order to win Big Brother you have to be mean, vicious, aggressive, and unapologetically callous. Derrick and Cody for me, are a reminder that it IS possible to win this game on a high note and not only that, but you can be entirely deserving without having people hate your guts at the end of it all.
Side note: I’m not usually one to remember what people look like, specifically what they are wearing, but Julie Chen’s outfit in this episode was awesome! I like wearing dark clothes (cause I feel invisible LOL), but I feel like this outfit was really appealing on her. Definitely one of the best of this season. Oh, and I’m a huge fan of crosses, wings, and feathers so to see her have a necklace with a feather piece made me go insane (in a good way). Actually, her feather looks like a feather that I was going to order online in the form of a neat bracelet, but for whatever reason I didn’t get it.
Anyways, back to the show. It has officially been announced that Big Brother will be returning for two more seasons! YAY!! Who knows, maybe you’ll see me on the show! Funny story, I actually applied one year and every time I watch the video back, I just want to cry my eyes out. It’s the worst thing in this entire world. I have to step up my game if I’m going to try again.
For now, I’ll leave you with a Big Brother Live Chat video where seasons 11 & 13’s Jeff Schroeder interviews Derrick on his big win as well as his experience in the house. You can watch Season 16 in its entirety on CBS.com. And catch the brand new season when it airs sometime in mid 2015!
