January 5, 2010…the day that changed my life forever. I was 19 years old and had spent almost two decades hiding a deep truth about myself from those close to me. I finally came face to face with the decision to come out. I took a huge leap of faith and found myself in a world my younger self never could’ve dreamt was possible; a world where people know that I’m gay and yet, still love me nonetheless. Throughout the process of coming out, I decided to document my thoughts and emotions which turned into a private series that I call, The Video Journals.
Much of my passion in storytelling and the growth that I’ve experienced since coming out, all has to do with the quality time spent talking to my camera. The Video Journals has and always will have a very special place in my heart for getting me through some of the scariest moments in my life. Now that I’m on the other side of that, the journals have become an exciting time capsule filled with precious moments that I’ve shared with those close to me.
One thing I know for sure is that filming The Video Journals is something that I see myself doing for the rest of my life. One of my major goals from the beginning was to have something to show my future kids what their father’s life was like growing up. I’d be proud to share the emotional journey of my coming out story depicted in the first season as well as the fun and exciting moments that I got to film with friends and family in the years that followed.
It’s mind-boggling to say this, but The Video Journals has reached a milestone! As of June 22, 2019, I started filming Season 10! The interesting thing is, Season 1-5 took place in America and then in Season 6 I made a big move to Korea and have been here ever since. I originally had no intention of living here for so long but things have been great with my life here. I can’t believe how fast the time goes! I pray that Season 10 brings a lot of joy and excitement. As a milestone season, I hope that it’s one to remember for many years to come!
